DESCRIPTION:The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation is excited to announce its annual Thanks for Giving Coins for Cancer event\, scheduled to take place at the Cape Hatteras Elementary School from November 17 to November 21\, 2025. During this event\, children are encouraged to bring in spare change with their parents’ permission to help raise funds for the foundation. 100% of the funds raised will support residents of Hatteras Island who are battling cancer. \nStudents will bring in change daily\, and bills and checks are also welcome. At the end of the week\, the totals will be tallied up\, and the class that raises the most money will win a cupcake party and a trophy for their classroom. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about contributing to a worthy cause and supporting their community! \n

The price includes this year’s HICF 5K T-shirt and awards\, and is lower than in previous years to encourage more participation. \nThe course entails a scenic run\, walk\, or bike ride through a quiet soundside neighborhood of Kinnakeet Shores in Avon. Folks are encouraged to wear pink in honor of Donna Peele\, and to mark October’s significance as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. \nParticipants can pre-register for the event here. DESCRIPTION:The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation Paddle Palooza in Honor of Andy McKinney will be held on Sunday\, June 23\, at Ocean Air Sports\, 39450 NC Hwy 12 in Avon.  Registration is at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m.  Everyone is welcome to join in the fun of a lightly competitive 5K race on the open waters of the Pamlico Sound. \nThe cost to enter the 5K race is $25\, and participants can paddleboard or kayak their way through the on-the-water course that launches from OceanAir Sports in Avon. Bring an appetite and get ready to sample a variety of chowders and to help crown this year’s “Best Chowder on Hatteras Island”. \nThis highly anticipated contest pits area restaurants\, caterers\, and aspiring home cooks against each other and allows visitors to taste a variety of fresh samples that range from your traditional clam chowders to Cajun-inspired chowders to thick\, comforting seafood chowders that all celebrate the incredible flavors of Hatteras. \nUpon entering the tent\, you are given a ticket which allows you to sample all the chowders and cast a vote for your favorite. The chowder with the most votes is crowned “Best Chowder on Hatteras Island” and earns bragging rights for the year! We will keep you posted on the date for 2022. \nCome hungry to this yearly event which is fully sponsored by Dinky’s Waterfront Restaurant. Dinky’s closes down for this event and focuses all their efforts on preparing a feast for us which includes BBQ pork\, fried turkey\, grilled chicken\, baked beans\, coleslaw\, potato salad\, green bean casserole\, macaroni salad and rolls. The HICF board members and their friends prepare a wide array of homemade desserts which are hard to pass by. Also included are tea and soft drinks. \nThis event is always held the week of the Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament. Though this tournament is headquartered in Morehead\, Hatteras usually has many boats that fish from here. In addition to a great meal\, its always fun to walk along the docks and see all the boats and feel the excitement. \nSuggested $20 per plate donation. Dinky’s donates 100% of the proceeds from this event to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately due to Covid\, this event will not happen in 2021.  We will keep you posted on the date for 2022. \nOBX Paddle Palooza is a fun filled day of paddleboarding events. The event is hosted in part with OceanAir Sports in Avon. Our day begins with a relaxing yoga practice done on the water on paddleboards. After our registration signup is complete\, we have a meeting with all participants where we go over safety and rules for our 5K race. The race takes paddlers around towers and islands and up and down several of the canals in North Avon. This race is timed and can be as competitive as you want. There is a fun 1-mile race to follow for those wanting something less strenuous. Following the paddleboarding events on the water we gather for lunch\, prizes and raffles. We are excited by the amount of great items we get from local businesses each year including gift certificates\, local art\, clothing and even paddles and surfboards. There is sure to be something for everybody! Be on the lookout for future dates and ways to be involved.

Year after year\, we have continued this tradition serving up a wonderful meal and dancing the night away to a exciting band. As you must be 21 to attend this event\, HICF’s Spring Dance has become a right of passage to many of the Island residents. \nWhether at the Hatteras Village Civic Center or the Hatteras Marlin Club\, we decorate our venue to be consistent with our chosen theme and many of our guest dress to meet the occasion. Themes have included a Las Vegas Night\, the ‘80’s\, the roaring 20’s and even an enchanted forest. Our menu always leaves our guests impressed as they enjoy everything from heavy appetizers to delectable desserts. We provide beer\, wine and set-ups. \nPlease join us and get ready to dance the night away!!!
