One of the most popular events at the annual Day at the Docks Festival — the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation (HICF) Chowder Cook-Off — is returning once again for this year’s celebration on Saturday, September 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. across the Street from Nedo’s True Value, 57866 NC Hwy 12 in Hatteras.
During this highly competitive contest, where bragging rights will last all year, island restaurants will gather to battle for the coveted title of 2026 HICF Best Chowder.

For chowder lovers, the best part is getting to sample them all! The tasting fee is $10, and tasters will serve as the all-important judges, sampling each entry and voting for their favorite.
And while the competition is all about finding the best chowder on Hatteras Island, the real winners are the local cancer patients and families who benefit from the event. Proceeds from every tasting ticket go directly to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation to help fund grants for local residents battling cancer.

Founded in 2000, the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation provides financial assistance to local residents dealing with cancer, helping with expenses such as travel, prescriptions, and medical bills not covered by insurance.
Since its inception, HICF has assisted hundreds of islanders with cancer and their families, providing more than $1 million in grants.
