HI Cancer Foundation’s St. Patrick’s Day Brunch attracts a sold-out crowd…and a wild pack of Mrs. Ropers

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation’s St. Patrick’s Day Brunch attracted a colorful crowd of residents, visitors, and a stylish pack of Mrs. Ropers who took a break from their “Three’s Company” world, (and collective husband Stanley Roper), to invade Hatteras Island for the day.

The brunch was a sold-out event that featured live music by Rory Kelleher, mimosas, a full buffet, a Selfie Station, and a Bloody Mary bar, as well as raffles with prizes donated by generous local businesses.

Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation Vice President Donna Barnett said that the March 17 brunch was an extremely successful initiative, raising an estimated $6,500 for the local foundation.

As a result, the St. Patrick’s Day Brunch will become a new annual tradition for the HICF, alongside the many other events that the HICF hosts as fundraisers every year.

The HICF is an all-volunteer and non-profit organization that supports cancer patients and their families living on Hatteras Island. Founded in December 2000, the foundation’s primary goal is to raise funds to provide financial assistance for medical bills, prescriptions, travel expenses, and other needs that might not be taken care of by insurance.

To date, the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation has assisted over 234 islanders with cancer and their families with grants in excess of $1,000,000.

“We’re delighted with the big turnout, the enthusiasm, and all of the donations raised for the Cancer Foundation at the St. Patrick’s Day Brunch,” said Barnett. “It was definitely an event to be remembered, and we’re grateful for everyone who came and for everyone who continues to support our Hatteras Island community members and neighbors in need.”

Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation and local students team up for Creating for a Cause

Hatteras Island is full of some amazingly talented artists, especially our students. Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation board members decided to give these artists a chance to be seen.

They started their first student outreach program with the help of Cape Hatteras Secondary School art teacher Justin Paxton. “Artists Creating for a Cause” challenged both middle and high school students to use their creative minds and develop a piece to go along with the theme “a light through the fight.”

The winners receive a cash prize, and their artwork printed on totes is available for purchase through HICF. HICF will be donating 25% of the profits from each bag to the art program at CHSS. When you purchase a tote, you will be supporting both HICF and the art program at CHSS.

So many magnificent pieces were turned in it was difficult to choose. After a meeting of the board members to cast their votes, the winners for the school year 2022-2023 are high school student, Kylie Philips and middle school student Kathrine Boswell.

HICF rings in 2023 with a successful New Year’s Eve dance

The Hatteras Island Civic Center was decorated with the soft glow of white lights and candles, small pine tree forests, and palm leaves. The décor was in shades of black, white, gold, and silver. It was the first dance hosted by HICF since the Coronavirus pandemic. The dance floor glittered as many showed up to celebrate the approaching new year and dance the night away to the sounds of DJ John Harper from 99.1 The Sound. The guests were welcomed with tantalizing heavy hor d’oeuvres from a menu created by the talented Dee Callahan. There was a silent auction where guests had the opportunity to bid on some very enticing prizes. The hit of the night was the selfie station where guests could use props and make some memories.  At the closing of the night, 2023 was rung in by a champagne toast. The dance was a fun time had by all thanks to the wonderful sponsors on the island.

We have many sponsors to thank for the contributions that made the dance a success. HICF 5K Draws a Colorful Crowd

The soundside Kinnakeet Shores neighborhood was the most colorful spot on Hatteras Island on Saturday morning, October 8, thanks to the annual HICF Positively Pink 5K.

Returning live for the first time since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, the event is a popular fundraiser for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation (HICF). Founded in the year 2000, the HICF provides assistance to local residents dealing with cancer to help with needs such as travel expenses, prescriptions, and medical supplies, as well as medical bills that are not covered by insurance.

Since its inception, the HICF has assisted over 211 islanders with cancer and their families, with grants in excess of $1,000,000.

Capital City Four Wheelers Donate $4,367 to the HICF

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation (HICF) would like to give a big thank you to the Capital City Four Wheelers (CCFW) for their donation of $4,367. The 35th Annual CCFW Surf Fishing Tournament was held on October 17th & 18th, making it one of only a few tournaments that have been held this year on Hatteras Island. Their turnout was awesome with 611 entrants.

This year, this family-oriented four-wheel drive club in the Richmond, Virginia metro area had to make some changes to the format of their tournament to make sure the whole event occurred while socially distant. The fishing part was easy. Everything else, from packet pick-up to buying raffle tickets was done by drive-thru process at specific times with military precision.

The donation made to HICF was from money raised through their rod raffles. One of these was a custom Century Rod and bait-casting reel combo from their longtime sponsor, Ryan White of Hatteras Jack’s in Rodanthe, NC.  The other was a custom CPS 12′ 8″ 2-piece spinning Rod and an Akios Fireloop Spinning Reel combo from Tommy Farmer of Carolina Cast Pro and Joe Moore of One More Cast, who joined together.

CCFW has been donating to HICF for many years. In 2016, CCFW made another generous donation to HICF in memory of Susie Coates, one of their recently deceased members who succumbed to cancer earlier that year. Susie was impressed with HICF’s efforts to help those battling cancer on the Island and had requested that donations be made to HICF upon her passing.

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation and ultimately those on the Island battling cancer sincerely appreciate CCFW’s continued support. To those who donated the rod & reel combos, as well as all the participants who sought and bought tickets, we thank you for your friendship, compassion and support.

On Hatteras Island, October is the Time to Drink Pink

Forget the traditional fall colors of red, orange and brown – on Hatteras Island, October is the time to think pink.

The month of October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s an important designation for women everywhere, which includes our island neighbors who are close to home.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers for American women, and the average risk of a woman developing breast cancer at some point in her life is around 12%. (Although less common, it’s also possible for men to develop breast cancer as well.)

This is why on Hatteras Island a number of local restaurants and businesses have joined the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation (HICF) in their annual Drink Pink Campaign, which celebrates our local ladies through delicious and island-wide libations.

HICF is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization which provides support for cancer patients and their families who live on Hatteras Island. Founded in the year 2000, the HICF provides assistance to local residents dealing with cancer to help with needs such as travel expenses, prescriptions and medical supplies, as well as medical bills that are not covered by insurance. To date, the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation has assisted over 197 residents with cancer through grants in excess of $985,000.

In an effort to address this continual need for help throughout Hatteras Island, the “Drink Pink” campaign was first launched in October 2014 by Jomi Price at Ketch 55, and has grown every year with more and more restaurants and businesses getting involved.

This toast-worthy event features ample opportunities to sample pink drinks of all varieties – from milkshakes to cocktails – as restaurants offer their own pink concoctions, with all proceeds going to the HICF.

During the month of October, restaurants across Hatteras Island will support HICF by including a special pink drink on their menus. HICF encourages locals and visitors to sample the various drinks – (responsibly of course) – from the different locations.

Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation Launches Newly Redesigned Website

New website paid by grant and support from
Outer Banks Community Foundation

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation announces the launching of www.hicf.org, their newly redesigned website which offers information on the organization and it’s history, applications for those on Hatteras Island that are dealing with cancer, a list of events and fundraising activities that can help support qualified applicants and more. This new website was made possible by a grant from the Outer Banks Community Foundation and paid from the Milton A. Jewell Grant Fund, the Hatteras Fund, and the Community Fund and was designed by GCP Design & Marketing.

The new site features a streamlined, modern design, and improved functionality. As we are still the same organization of neighbors helping neighbors, we wanted to make ourselves a little more digital. You can submit a grant application online, complete a volunteer form, request durable medical equipment (DME), upload a recipe for our next cookbook, and as always, make a donation to HICF.

Other highlights include a new thank you wall found on the About tab and more descriptive details about upcoming Events, with the next one, and only one so far this year, being HICF’s 1st “Virtual” 5K, which offers everyone from near or far the opportunity to join us for this annual run.

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation’s hope with the new website is to offer a place for those who need assistance to come for information and for those looking to support us to plan on joining us for some of our highly anticipated events and fundraisers or simply make a donation.

17th Annual HICF 5K and Fun Run is Going Virtual for 2020

The annual HICF 5K, which is a fall event that raises money for the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, is going virtual this year in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Locally famous for its wave of pink-infused participants who traditionally follow a 3.1-mile course through the heart of Kinnakeet Shores, this year, runners and walkers can join in the race from wherever they call home.

“We are excited for HICF’s first virtual run and hope to host more in the future, with [the] uncertainty of the ‘new normal,’” stated the organization in a recent announcement. “This run will be available Columbus weekend from 8 a.m. Friday, October 9, until 8 a.m. Tuesday, October 13.”

The cost will be $35.00 per individual, but participants are encouraged to run in groups of at least four members at a cost of $30.00 per person.

The event will also feature a fun run for 2020 that is one mile. The cost for the fun run is $20.

“Even though this is a virtual event, we still want to see everyone’s participation and crazy pink outfits, and ask [you] to tag us on Facebook [at] Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation,” stated organizers. “We have a new t-shirt design that will be mailed out to all participants. Local pick up will be available on October 1 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. in the parking lot of Conner’s Supermarket, and all other shirts will be mailed on October 2.”

HICF Thanks Outer Banks Hospital for Recent Grant Funds

The Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation (HICF) expressed their gratitude to the Outer Banks Hospital in a recent announcement, citing the hospital’s continued generosity through the Vidant Community Health Benefit Program.

Per the recent update, HICF was awarded grant funds via the program to assist Hatteras Island residents with costs incurred when traveling on and off the island for cancer-related treatments.

“We appreciate working with community partners like Vidant and are thankful for their support,” stated HICF.
